Countdown to Ultra Music Festival – Simian Mobile Disco

Simian Mobile Disco

I love SMD!  These guys were one of the first groups I got into when I indulged into EDM.  If you don’t like them, you can at least thank them mercifully for contributing to Justice’s first hit track “We Are Your Friends.”  SMD formed from the remnants of the UK rock group Simian.  These days, SMD gets down to some seriously dark and heavy techno, but their sound has definitely changed over the years.  In 2007, the group came out with “Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release,” a boomin’ album comprised of glitchy, mildly techno tracks including “Tits and Acid,” “Hustler,” and “Sleep Deprivation.”

In 2009, the group released Temporary Pleasures which featured guest vocals from Hot Chip’s lead singer Alexis Taylor on “Bad Blood,” Chris Keating of Yeasayer on “Audacity of Huge,” and Gossip’s lead singer Beth Ditto on “Cruel Intentions.”  SMD remained true to their darker, experimental sound between minimal house and techno, brightened only by the uplifting vocals overlaying the tracks.

Nowadays, the group has gone completely darkened techno.  “Aspic” breathes techno minimalism, from the deep dark spaces of a land far, far away in a galaxy filled with Roland TB 303’s and acid house influences.  What I’m trying to say is that SMD has fully embraced who they are and for that their fan base loves them back.

Check out SMD do their dirty techno business on Saturday, March 26th on the Live Stage between British indie favorites The Klaxons and Berlin maestro Boys Noize.
